What’s involved in the Academics Advance programme?

First, you’ll speak to one of our consultants. They’ll be able to carry out an initial assessment of your suitability for the programme (you must have an undergraduate degree and grade ‘C’ or above GCSE Maths and English). Then we can start to look at the most suitable schools available and arrange interviews.

When you begin the programme you’ll be working as a Teaching Assistant to allow you to get used to the school environment, the students and your new colleagues. You’ll continue to work as a TA as you start your training, and you’ll upload work based evidence online as you complete each module.

You’ll then start to take some responsibility for lesson planning whilst liaising with your school mentor. This will lead to a phased introduction to teaching, starting with smaller groups, but eventually you'll be planning and teaching 80% of the lessons.

Once your training modules are complete, your work is submitted to the University of Derby for Assessment Only Qualified Teacher Status. Once you’ve passed, you can then work as a Qualified Teacher!
